One Man and the Sea
Henry David Mauser
In briny air on shifting sands I stand,
As thunderous waves come crashing toward the shore,
Assaulting, far as eye extends, the land:
Same man, same sea, in reverie once more
No bird or beast here dares to break the calm,
Save seagulls, wheeling, calling out to me
A many throated song, a minstrel’s psalm –
The resonating tongue of mirthful Sea.
As zephyrs lash a laughing sea the tide
Sends forth her spray, a recollect of past
Encounters when as friends we would confide,
And then renew the memories of last.
But as the dusk comes stealing cross the sky,
A final glance o’er endless waves I take,
And draw a breath and heave a heavy sigh,
Then for a time the surf leaves in my wake.
