Transatlantic Instructions

A Forgotten Memory | Sarah Westmoreland | Photography

     1. Enter those failures, lanky longings
and thoughts of being into a
     book. Don’t ask what if
     another, other place,
     other time. Don’t say
     that you’re okay
if your journal is filled with thoughts like

those.

     2. Make your bed. Who is grateful
for reason in the face of desperation?
     We all want to
     let go, even
     of our most private
     thoughts and other things—
the small things that make up a life.

I know I take up space in your head
without paying rent. I’m gone
but I leave a crease
in the pillow.

     3. Let me take up space. Just a
little in the back of your mind,
         I’ll share it
         with your thoughts before you
         go to sleep.

I’ll sleep there too, very quietly.
