’89 Saturn

through the sunroof we taste
freedom in the sunlight and hear
sweetness in music bumping
through decades-old speakers.
no hands on the steering wheel
teen spirit spilling from open bottles
and cracked cans littering a
beat-up black leather backseat.
exploring hidden galaxies of
interstates and cracked-concrete
highways in a two-thousand dollar
space ship without air conditioning.
we sail through sunsets and fading skies
while the digital dash clock creeps
quickly towards a curfew chaining
feet to reality and wheels to road.
