                                                                                                                             thump
It begins and ends every trip home
                                           Over the first, then gravel grinding
                                                    Slipping, sliding, clipping, climbing,
                                                                     Down the humped-backed
                                           Pocked-marked, pothole divoted
                                                                       Steering wheel clenching
                                                                                                                     Thump
                                                                                                                             wrenching
                                                   Conversation ending
                                                                     Mutual pause sending
                                                                                                   Teeth from chomping tongue
                               Stretch of forgotten, washed out gravel drive
                                           To the ratta-tat-tat clatter Clap
                                                                       Of the second guard
                                                                                                            And onto smooth paved road.
