The Rattle-Tat-Clatter of the Cattle Guard
Megan McCarter
Glaze’n Shapes | Allison Gant | Slip Casting
Head Rattttttttling Clatttttttterrring
A bump-ety bump
Teeth Chatttttttterrring
Thump
thump
It begins and ends every trip home
Over the first, then gravel grinding
Slipping, sliding, clipping, climbing,
Down the humped-backed
Pocked-marked, pothole divoted
Steering wheel clenching
Thump
wrenching
Conversation ending
Mutual pause sending
Teeth from chomping tongue
Stretch of forgotten, washed out gravel drive
To the ratta-tat-tat clatter Clap
Of the second guard
And onto smooth paved road.
